The Format: Half Workshop, Half Show

Sillygander is intentionally split into two distinct segments, making it the perfect destination whether you want to actively participate or just enjoy the performance.

Part 1: The Intro Workshop (5:30 PM)

If you’ve ever wanted to try improv Northern Virginia style, this is your zero-pressure launchpad. Led by experienced, welcoming instructors from the Resonance network, this 40 minute session is designed entirely for absolute beginners and the improv-curious.

Through collaborative group games and foundational exercises, you’ll explore the core tenets of applied improv: active listening, spontaneous agreement (“Yes, And“), and building trust with scene partners. It’s an hour of spontaneous play where our collective imagination is the only limit.

Part 2: The Playtime Jam (6:10 PM)

Once the workshop wraps, the lights go down and the energy turns up for a live performance. Local indie ensembles, veteran community players, and brave workshop graduates take the stage to spin audience suggestions into spontaneous skits.

Because it’s created entirely on the fly by your neighbors, it is an incredibly supportive and collaborative live comedy show in the DMV. Expect a night that is warm, completely unpredictable, and above all, really fun.

Why We Gather: Building Connection Through Play

This isn’t another comedy show where the audience passively listens to jokes. Sillygander is a community sandbox. Our mission at Resonance Improv Alliance is to inspire and empower individuals to build meaningful connections through the simple, transformative principles of improv. We believe that when people laugh, create, and support each other through the unknown, walls come down.

Who is Sillygander for?

Whatever draws you to Sillygander, there’s a spot for you.

  • If You’re Looking for Your People: Walking into a new space can be intimidating, but our intro workshop is a zero-judgment, completely supportive equalizer. It’s a casual space to meet new friends, laugh hard, step into your creative confidence, and leave feeling deeply connected to the people around you. No multi-week commitments required.
  • If You’re Looking to Share the Joy: For the community members who just want to watch and cheer, you are a vital part of the magic. Your laughter and energy feed the room, creating the safe, warm environment our players need to take creative risks on stage.
  • If You’re a Local Performer Seeking Community: For regional improvisers, Sillygander is a collaborative home base. This is a dedicated space to meet new friends, run fresh formats with old peers, and log vital stage reps in front of an active, incredibly encouraging audience that wants you to succeed.

Content Note: Because live improvisation is entirely unscripted and unpredictable, content themes typically land between a PG-13 and R-rated baseline. While it is an excellent resource for teens and adults, parental discretion is advised for attendees under 18 (minimum age 16).

🚪 Just Show Up! No Tickets Required.

Sillygander is a true community gathering. You don’t need a ticket, an RSVP, or a confirmation code to join the circle or watch the show. Just show up as you are.

How to Perform at Sillygander 🪿

Sillygander is an open, collaborative community playground. Because we believe improv is at its best when we build something together, we don’t do solo stand-up slots. Instead, we play as a community.

Here is how you can get stage time:

1. Jump Into the Open Community Jam (No Sign-Up Required!)

The second half of our evening is a live, unstructured community jam. Anyone can play! When you walk into the room, you’ll see a physical bucket near the stage. If you want to play in a scene, just drop your name on a scrap of paper into the bucket before the show starts.

Our evening MC will draw names completely at random to form instant, supportive mashup teams on the fly. It’s the perfect, low-stakes environment to run fun scenes, meet new playing partners, and laugh with your neighbors.

2. Bring Your Ensembled Team for Practice & Feedback

Are you part of an established local indie team or an experimental ensemble looking to log reps? We want to support your growth! Sillygander is designed to eventually become a vibrant workshop space for constructive community feedback.

If your team wants to claim a dedicated slot to practice a specific format and receive supportive feedback from the room, drop us a line ahead of time at shows@resonanceimprov.org so we can get you on the schedule.

Stylized, distressed retro typography reads "Sillygander is brought to you by Resonance Improv."
